Chinese Blue Pipa Trio
For Families: Repertory Theatre of America, Inc. production presented by Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts as part of the Lunar New Year Festival. The Blue Pipa Trio, comprised of Min Xiao-Fen (pipa, vocals); Mark Helias (bass), and Steve Salerno (guitar), transcends borders with cutting-edge music. A breathtaking virtuoso and courageous pioneer, Min blends ancient Chinese music and her own compositions with interpretations of jazz and bluegrass. Min Xiao-Fen’s work has been commissioned by The Kitchen in NYC, the Trio has performed at the JVC Jazz Festival, and recorded for Bjork’s new album. Starts at 2:00 PM.

For Families: In a Celebration of the World Cup in South Africa with Music, Grammy award-winning bassist, composer, and vocalist Kumalo possesses a unique musical style reflecting influences from around the world, including South African traditional folk, contemporary jazz, and salsa. Kumalo has collaborated with Paul Simon, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, and Randy Brecker, and leaves on tour with “Simon and Garfunkel” following this concert. Joining Bakithi onstage is vocalist Robbi “K” Kumalo, a powerful lyric soprano and back-up singer for Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin and Diana Ross, who for many years has been a major force in bringing a sense of the world community to children’s musical theater. Featuring John Blake, Jr., V iolin and African Fiddle; Diane Monroe, V iolin and African Fiddle, Sumi Tonooka, Piano; Boris Kozlov, Bass; Harry “Butch” Reed, Drums; Doc Gibbs, Percussion, and Charlotte Blake-Alston, African Fiddle and V ocals. Indo-Jazz Musician Masterclass: Sunny Jain Collective
A clinic for professional musicians and college music students, led by one of the leading voices in Indo-Jazz, drummer Sunny Jain. Learn about the applications of Indian tal, rhythm cycles, as well as various rhythmic concepts, such as lay, yati, and tihai. Learn Sunny’s compositional approach to utilizing Indian raags and applications of jazz harmony to raag-based melodies. Interested participants must first send a resume highlighting artistic experience in jazz/music to education@flushingtownhall.org Starts at 7:00 PM.

For Families: A fabulous time guaranteed for all ages! Led by drummer Sunny Jain, Red Baraat is the first and only dhol and brass band in the States. This NYC-based group plays fresh originals, traditional Punjabi songs, Bollywood numbers, and has delivered blistering performances at the Chicago World Music Festival, Lincoln Center, DJ Rekha’s Basement Bhangra, 4th Annual Droma Gypsy Festival, Joe’s Pub, India Independence Day Parade, and Barbes, as well as a live radio broadcast on John Schaefer’s Soundcheck WNYCFM 93.9, an NPR affiliate. Meet the Artists following the performance. Starts at 2:15 PM.

Since 1923, Queens has been the home to an astonishing list of jazz artists who migrated there to be close to the jazz scene in New York City. The list of artists who lived in Queens include John Coltrane, Clark Terry, Jimmy Rushing, Lena Horne, Tony Bennett, Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald, Mildred Bailey and Billie Holiday. The Queens Jazz Orchestra, a program of Flushing Council, will perform a potpourri of tunes from these legends and play excerpts from Conductor Jimmy Heath’s original composition “New Visions”. Starts at 8:00 PM.
