Travel back in time to the 1920’s Savoy Ballroom as music director Frank Owens and choreographer/ dance historian Mickey Davidson team up to present a dance experience like no other. Next on our Black History Month Trilogy (also known as African-American History Month), we are celebrating the gravity-defying contributions of Frankie Manning and Norma Miller known as The Lindy Hop and Air Steps. Coupled with swing music tributes once played at The Savoy Ballroom, you can take part in celebrating history with us.
Audiences will learn from Mickey Davidson dances from the swing era and history of African American Dances. Then they’ll get to put their new moves to practice as Frank Owens and a swing band transport us all to the 1920s through an unforgettable concert. Also joining the night will be the talented Theara J Ward, Music Director Patience Higgins, The Savoy Swingers, and Harvest Moon Hoppers.
See you on the dance floor!
About the Artist:
Mickey Davidson's performing experiences include affiliations with Dianne McIntyre's"Sounds In Motion Dance Co.", "Norma Miller's Lindy Hoppers", Charles "Cookie" Cook, "Savoy Swingers", "Roots Of Brazil", Cecil Taylor, Sun Ra, Jeanne Lee, Newman Baker, Frank Owens and Oliver Lake to name a few.
Mickey is the primary choreographer and director for Mickey D. & Friends, a group of dancers and musicians that explores and performs the interlocking relationship between music and dance. From 1993- 2013 Ms. Davidson took over the leadership for the arts-in-education dance company, "Okra Dance Co.", this company presents multi-cultural dance programs in the states of N. Y., N.J., Pa., and Ct. Ms Davidson taught Jazz Dance and Tap, as a Visiting Lecturer at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Ct. for seven-teen years.
Ms. Davidson has been affiliated with Lindy Hop since 1985 when she started rehearsing with Norma Miller and her Jazz Dancers. Since Norma's return to Las Vegas, Mickey has maintained the group under the name "Savoy Swingers". Not only does the group maintain Ms. Miller's choreography, they perform other diverse jazz styles such as Tap and Modern Jazz in addition to floor and aerial Lindy Hop. Shows presently on tour are: "Swingin' Sisters", "Swingin' In Time", "Great Dancing Ladies" and Swingin' At the Savoy".
Mickey teaches special Lindy Hop and Lindy related workshops nationally and internationally. She frequently partners and assists Lindy Hop legend Frankie Manning in workshops, videos ("Everybody's Dancing"), TV (Swingin' with Duke, PBS) and during live performances, and was one of three choreographers for the European Tour of the Broadway production of "Black and Blue". Ms D. sets and maintained the Swing and Blues choreography inherited from Mr. Manning.
