Artist Statement

This project began as a logical outgrowth of my thirty-five years as a designer of clothing. I was looking for something as artful and creative as fashion itself to hang articles of clothing on.  I began to seek out and recycle materials from the Northeast Pennsylvania region where I lived to make these coat hooks, combining natural objects with industrial artifacts of the area's manufacturing and mining history in ways that were not only aesthetically appealing but functional as well.  Interestingly, the more hooks I made, the more I came to see and treat each piece as a stand-alone sculptural work of art.  Reflecting on my process, particularly on how I acquire my materials from local scrapyards, flea markets and old industrial sites, I realized I was combining three elements that I love-- natural, industrial and historical.  From that point on, I began to view these sculptures not only as tributes to America's glorious industrial past, but also as representations of the need to balance that which is manmade with the natural environment.
 

About The Artist

Dori was raised in California.  She moved to New York to study fashion at Parson's School of Design.  Her first job in the industry was with Ralph Lauren.  Owner and designer of dori lloyd. a women's clothing studio. Her first collection was featured in I Magnin's speciality store in all 6 front windows.  She sold to high-end speciality stores in the United States.  Renting a second home in  Pennsylvania began a period of producing small pieces of furniture and a line of Sculptural Hooks.  Now living again back in Northern California, and still designing.
