Flushing Town Hall, in partnership with KoreanAmericanStory.org, is pleased to present HAN IN TOWN. A love letter to a community that raised Janice Chung, HAN IN TOWN presents a new series of photographs that asks visitors to consider what the foundations of a place are and what constitutes the fabric of a neighborhood in transition. In HAN IN TOWN, Chung captures these exchanges that take place in what was once the epicenter of the Korean American community in New York City – Flushing, Queens. Chung focuses on the various businesses that have continued to serve the Korean American community in Flushing through all of the neighborhood’s transformations. The businesses range from nail salons to restaurants to garden stores, and span across Union Street, Murray Hill, Northern Boulevard, and 162nd street.

“I grew up meandering through all the corners of Flushing. As a child, following my mom through the aisles of Assi Plaza to spending the late hours at karaokes and pochas as a young adult, each memory evokes nostalgia and a feeling of home. This project is dedicated to all the moms and pops who fed me, cut my hair, and sacrificed everything for the next generation of Korean Americans.” - Janice Chung

Janice Chung is a Korean American photographer born and raised in New York City. Through her work, Chung amplifies and deconstructs her Korean American identity by capturing moments that are deeply personal. In doing so, she hopes to shed light on the intricate details of immigrant and diasporic life while straddling the two places she calls home, New York and Korea. Chung earned her B.F.A. in photography at the School of Visual Arts and is currently based in Queens, New York.
