The Amami Islands (奄美群島, Amami-guntō) belong to Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan and is an archipelago off southwestern Kyushu, very close to Okinawa, formerly called the Ryukyu Kingdom. Shimauta is a genre of songs originating from the Amami Islands.
