Acclaimed pianist/composer
Helen Sung celebrates the release of
Quartet+, her latest album on Sunnyside Records. Having lived much of her life at the intersections of different worlds —classical and jazz, and as the American-born daughter of Chinese immigrants— her desire to harmonize these worlds with joy and humanity is at the heart of
Quartet+ which celebrates women’s artistry. Quartet+ vividly blends the jazz and classical worlds with new original compositions and arrangements of works by Geri Allen, Mary Lou Williams, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Carla Bley, and Marian McPartland performed by her all-star Quartet and special guest Harlem Quartet.
A winner of the Kennedy Center’s Mary Lou Williams Piano Competition, Helen's band has appeared at SFJAZZ, Jazz at Lincoln Center Shanghai, Blue Note Beijing, and the Monterey and Newport jazz festivals. She has performed with Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Wynton Marsalis, Regina Carter, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Cecile McLorin Salvant. A Steinway Artist, Helen was named a Guggenheim Fellow and released her vinyl debut,
Everybody’s Waltz, in 2021.
